10 hurt in Eden College BCL factional feud

At least 10 people were injured as rival factions of the Bangladesh Chhatra League's (BCL) Eden Mohila College unit clashed on Sunday.

One of the factions told a media briefing earlier in the day to counter the extortion allegations against the BCL unit’s President Tamanna Jasmin Riva and General Secretary Razia Sultana.

The other faction organised another press meet earlier, accusing Tamanna, Razia and their followers of beating up Vice-President Jannatul Ferdous for bringing the allegations of extortion.

It demanded that the central BCL leaders expel Tamanna and Razia and form a new committee.

The faction held a victory rally at the Eden College Campus after driving out the two from the college campus.

Both press conferences were held outside Shaheed Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall.

Earlier in the evening, Riva left the campus area after being injured in an attack by rival BCL faction of Eden College Chhatra League unit while general secretary Razia Sultana took shelter in the administrative area of the campus. But around 9 pm she was also driven out under police protection by the rival BCL leaders of the same Committee.

Tensions have been simmering in the women’s college since Saturday midnight after Jannatul alleged Tamanna, Razia and their followers confined her to a room of the hall and beat her up for protesting against “extortion”.

She also accused the BCL unit president and general secretary of allowing only their followers to stay in the dormitory.

The central committee later formed a panel to investigate the incident.
