Business

According to reports on various news portals, the businessman and his partners reported made financial gains of Rs 1.85 lakh generated through LIVE revenue on the alleged smartphone app and over Rs 4.50 lakh through film sales.

Reports further state that the monthly revenue went as high as Rs 60 lakh with around more than 20 lakh users registered on the application.

The police, while seeking maximum custody of Kundra, told the court that the businessman was economically gaining by making and selling pornographic material.

Post Arrest

Indian actor, model, and television presenter Gehana Vasisth took to her verified Instagram profile on Tuesday (July 201) and posted a video in support of Raj Kundra. She claimed that she starred in of the erotic films on his app, did it consensually and received a handsome payment for it right after the shoot.

She also said, “None of the films are porn films. Those are just bold films as other producers like Ekta Kapoor, Anurag Kashyap, Vibhu Agarwal and many others make. Other apps like Netflix and Amazon has bolder content than this. One needs to understand the difference between erotica and porn. I will request people to watch those films and only then comment. Indian police have just misinterpreted.”

The arrest is the latest scandal to hit Kundra, who has two children with Bollywood superstar Shetty, the 2007 winner of British reality show, Celebrity Big Brother.

Several Bollywood celebrities including musician Mikha Singh and model Rakhi Sawant has released statements in favour of Kundra.

On the other hand, Bollywood actor Kangana Ranaut said in a statement that Kundra is the reflection of Bollywood and she will expose the underbelly of this industry in her upcoming film, ‘Tanu Weds Sheru.’

Previous Charges

In 2015, Kundra was banned for life from all cricket-related activities, following an investigation into match-fixing during his stint as a co-owner with Shetty of the popular Indian Premier League team Rajasthan Royals.

Indian law on Pornographic material

Moreover, India has strict laws against publishing and transmitting “obscene material”, but watching pornography in private is legal.

Yet, in October 2018, the government directed Indian Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to block 827 websites that host pornographic content following an order by the Uttarakhand High Court. The court cited the rape of a 10th standard girl from Dehradun by four of her seniors. The four accused told police that they raped the girl after watching pornography on the internet.

According to the biggest adult site in the world, Pornhub, the nation of 1.3 billion is its third-largest source of traffic in 2018, behind the United States and Britain.
