Application of semi-automated offside technology at the Qatar 2022 World Cup

FIFA (Federation Internationale de Football Association) has approved the new semi-automated offside technology and they confirmed the use of this technology during the matches at the Qatar 2022 World Cup.

Pierluigi Collina who is the head of refereeing announced the news during a press conference on Thursday, saying it will lead us to “faster and more accurate decision making.”

This new technology uses 12 cameras which are positioned around the stadium’s roof to track each and every movement of the players. Also to make the 3D virtual model of the match is uses 29 data points for each player.

The cameras will also track and analyze the position of the ball. The sensor inside the Qatar 2022 official match ball can record the exact moments when the ball is being kicked.

Through Artificial intelligence these data will generate and show the offside line and immediately alert the official referee room when a player gets the ball in an offside position. Later video match officials will check manually and let the pitch referee know whether the player is offside or not.
