Winning the first Test against New Zealand at the Bay Oval of Mount Maunganui, Bangladesh not only scripted history against the World Test Champions on their soil, but jumped off to the fifth spot of World Test Championship points table on Wednesday.
With the very first win of 2022, the Tigers bagged 12 points—the same as the Windies, who are currently ranking sixth among nine Test playing nations.
In the ICC World Test Championship (2021-23), teams will be ranked based on the percentage of points. A team gets 12 ( 100%) points for a win, 6 (50%) points for a tie and 4 (33.33%) points for a draw. Also for slow over-rates teams will lose one championship point for each over short.
Bangladesh have played three Test matches under the championship for the 2021-23 session, so far-- the second edition of the global competition.
Earlier, they lost two against visiting Pakistan last year. Australia and Sri Lanka are topping the list having won three and two matches respectively.
Pakistan are on the fourth position, followed by their arch-rival India.
Bangladesh pulled off a crushing eight-wicket victory over the Kiwis.
The tourists needed only 40 runs in their second innings for the historic win, their first ever in New Zealand and only their sixth in 61 away Tests.
The match was wrapped up in one session on the final day as Ebadot Hossain took a career best six for 46 and New Zealand were rolled in their second innings for 169.
It was also New Zealand's first loss in 16 home Tests over the past four years.
Bangladesh have previously lost all 32 matches played in New Zealand across all formats, including nine Tests, and they arrived to start this tour following back-to-back losses at home to Pakistan.
