'Zero application of international standards in the country'

The shopkeeper frowned when a buyer wanted to buy clothes as meter in the clothes market of New Market. There is no scale for meters. Rather, they feel comfortable as yards and feet. Although the law of the country mentions meter for the measurement of length. But its practical implication is nowhere to be found.

World Metrology Day

World Metrology Day is going to be celebrate this year like every year with the importance of proper weight and measurement and the conviction to increase public awareness in this regard. This day is celebrated on 20th May every year. The theme of this day in this year is ‘Measurement for good health '.

Highlighting the importance of measurement for good health, the day will be celebrated with proper dignity in Bangladesh like other countries of the world on Thursday (May 20).

There is no awareness at the consumer level

There is not much awareness at the consumer level about weights and measures. This has been observed recently in the case of watermelon purchases. Watermelon seller sold it as per kg with a higher price, though they brought it as per piece. Although some steps were taken by administration but the customers did not get the benefits.

Fine deception goes on in many sectors

In the field of measurement, subtle deception goes on in many sectors. At present, the size of bricks in brick kilns is being reduced and sold. As a result, the construction sector is having a negative impact. Recently, 64 brick kilns in Rajshahi have been fined for selling bricks below the prescribed size.

In addition, per meter has more than 39 inches of cloth. That cloth is sold to customers as 36-inch per yard. In this case, customers are being deprived of at least three inches of cloth every time.

Local System is more popular

Ali Hossain, a cloth merchant in New Market, told The Report that it usually takes two and a half yards of cloth to make a garment in a tailor's shop. This is how the measurement of yards is coming. In the case of meters, there is a need for a little more than two meters. So, there is hesitation at the consumer level with the addition of two meters, for this it is being sold in the yard method.

Lack of awareness and law enforcement

Former FBCCI president Shafiul Islam Mohiuddin said consumers are being deceived in many ways in the sector of measurements in the country. Although it has laws but it has not been implemented. In this case, it is necessary to ensure the correct use of awareness and measurement.

Helal Uddin, president of the Shop Owners Association, said it is important to ensure awareness and proper use rather than law enforcement in order to change the measure that has been in place for decades. In many cases the buyer and seller are not aware of the exact measurements.
