December 7: Unrest rises in global community

December 7 marks an important day in the history of Bangladesh’s struggle for liberation. On this day, Bhutan declared Bangladesh as an independent and sovereign state.

After India and Bhutan’s recognition, the international community continued to ardently support Bangladesh's liberation war. At the same time, there was a lot of pressure on the Pakistan government to abolish the war.

In the early hours of this day in 1971, Indian paratroopers attacked the main base of the Pakistani army in the area after landing near the Sylhet airport. Unable to withstand the onslaught, the Pakistani general in charge of Sylhet was forced to surrender with his troops by afternoon.

On this day, the 9th Division of the Indian Army reached Jessore Cantonment from the north without resistance. They were surprised to see the deserted army post. On being informed of the entry of Indian Army, the Pakistani Army fled the cantonment leaving behind their huge cache of weapons, ammunition and control room maps.

Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev called for a peaceful solution to the India-Pakistan war without outside interference on this historic day.

On the other hand, Major Afsar's troops attacked a Pakistan Army camp and police station from three directions at Bhaluka in Mymensingh.

Meanwhile, this was the day the US decided to withdraw financial aid to India. All these events make December 7 an important historical day in Bangladesh as well as in the global community.
