EVMs may be used in 50 to 70 parliamentary seats

Election Commissioner Rashida Sultana said Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) likely to be used between 50 and 70 constituencies in the 12th parliamentary polls.

She also said that the decision would be taken depending on how many machines used by last commission were usable.

She informed the issues to the reporters at Nirbachan Bhaban in Dhaka’s Agargaon on Monday.

In response to a question of journalists regarding use of CCTV cameras in next general election, she said, no decision on the use of CCTV cameras in the 12th parliamentary elections has been made.

She stated, “We absolutely want it, but it depends on the economic circumstances.”

The Election Commission desired EVM voting in a maximum of 150 constituencies. For that purpose, the commission sent a project proposal to the Ministry of Planning in October last year for the purchase and management of 200,000 EVMs at the cost of Tk8,711.44 crore.

However, the government decided not to process the project proposal considering financial reasons.

Rashida mentioned that while the use of EVMs was needed to be passed, the same did not require for CCTV.
