Fakhrul questions legality of collecting info of opposition men

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said the law enforcers has no legal authority to l collect the personal information of the opposition party men.

He said: "Law enforcers cannot collect personal data of any political party men without any specific reason in the country. They have no legal authority to do so. The move taken by the law enforcers is illegal, irrational and unacceptable as per the existing rules."

The BNP spokesperson on Friday made the remarks while addressing a press meet, condemning the decision of collecting personal information of opposition party leaders, activists and followers.

Referring to a radio message issued by the Rangamati Police Super, he said: "The police super on September 25 issued an order asking police officials concerned of the district to collect personal data of top leaders, activists and organisers of opposition political parties, including BNP."

"We have come to know that this order was issued as per the instructions given by the special brach authorities in Dhaka. They cannot do this as per the constitution or any existing laws in the country," he added.

Condemning the move taken by the police, Fakhrul further said: "This kind of drive is an example of naked inference on individual freedom, which is also the complete violation of the articles 31, 32 and 43 of the constitution."

Terming it an evil intention to harass people and to suppress the ongoing movement, he said: Police are creating panic among the party leaders and activists through raiding their houses and harassing them in the name of collecting their personal information."

"We are observing that this kind of raid is being carried out since we have started our programmes. Seeing huge public gathering in our rallies, they started such activities,” he said.

He urged the police to discharge their constitutional duties refraining from such drive in houses of the opposition men to create a democratic atmosphere in the country.
