Film star Eka detained, court denies remand

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Jasim ordered the heroine Eka to be sent to jail after a court hearing on Sunday (August 1), according to recent media reports.

The court has denied remand to the actor in two separate cases under the Domestic Workers Torture and Narcotics Control Act. She was then sent to jail after the hearing.

Police detained Bangladeshi film actor Eka on Saturday from the city's Hatirjheel area for allegedly torturing her housekeeper, according to a recent report by UNB.

The tortured housekeeper's name is Hajera, 30, who also works in different houses, in Hatirjheel’s Ulon region.

Inspector (operation) of Hatirjheel police station, Golam Ajam said they were informed of the incident through a phone call in helpline number 999 in the afternoon.

They rescued injured Hajera from the apartment and sent her immediately to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment.

"The housemaid had injury marks on her head and hands", said police sources.

The housekeeper’s husband said Eka asked Hajera on Saturday to stay overnight for help in shifting to a new house. After she declined, Eka asked her not to come from the next day.

"As Hajera asked for her dues as she was told to stop coming for work from the next day Eka hit her with some heavy object. Hearing her scream a neighbour informed the police,'' Hajera's husband told the press.

Eka made her film debut in Dhaka in 1996 with Shahida Arbi Simon in the film 'Rakhal Raja' directed by Tozammel Haque Bakul. The following year, she stepped up his career as a partner of the late superstar Manna with the film 'Teji,' directed by Kazi Hayat.

‘Teji,’ brought her star fame as a popular Bangla film heroine.

After the film’s success, almost 25 films of Eka were released with Manna. At that time, the audience loved the pair onscreen.

After the death of Manna, Eka gradually earned a name by acting alongside film stars like Rubel, Amit, Amin Khan, Alexander Bow, Shakil Khan, Ferdous, and even Shakib Khan.
