No arrest of journos instantaneously if case filed under DSA: Law Minister

Law, Justice and Parliamentary affairs minister Anisul Huq has expressed optimism over the rule barring detention of journalists immediately if any case filed under the Digital Security Act (DSA).

The minister was replying to queries of newsmen at the secretariat on Thursday (November 4).

“I have talked to the home minister. I told him to refrain from arresting journalists immediately if any case is filed. He also nodded,” Anisul Huq said.

He said, “The law was not formulated to rob off the freedom of speech and freedom of press. I want to clarify one thing about the Digital Security Act. The act is very essential.”

The minister emphasized on scrutinizing the fact before filing any case. According to the ICT law the dedicated cell to investigate the allegations has to be contented before the case is filed.

The DSA was passed on September 19, 2018, abolishing the controversial Information and Communication Act-2006.

Various quarters including rights groups and members of the civil society have claimed the law is exploitive and was made intending to establish tyranny.
