Peshawar blast: Death toll rises to 100

The tally of deceased from the attack on a mosque in Peshawar’s Police Lines area rose to 100 on Tuesday, a day after the explosion.

Lady Reading Hospital (LRH) spokesperson Mohammad Asim said that 100 dead bodies had been brought to the medical facility.

Peshawar Commissioner Riaz Mehsud said that the rescue and search operation at the blast site has been completed, after almost 24 hours, reports the Dawn.

The banned militant outfit Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the attack and distanced itself from it, hours after the acknowledgement.

Mostly police officials were martyred in one of the deadliest blast in Pakistan’s history during Zuhr prayer was being offered at around 1:40pm. Over 150 were injured after the explosion shook through the mosque in Peshawar’s Red Zone area.

In a statement, LRH spokesperson said that 89 bodies were brought to the hospital till Tuesday and all the deceased persons have been identified.

LRH spokesperson Mohammad Asim told the media that 158 injured people were brought to the hospital on Monday and most of them had been sent back home after medical aid. Currently, 57 of those injured are receiving treatment at the facility.

Speaking to the media on Monday, Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Peshawar Muhammad Ijaz Khan said, “The smell of explosives has been detected but it is too early to say anything substantial.”

Last year on March 4, a deadly suicide bomb blast acknowledged by Islamic State (IS) shook Peshawar, as a Shia mosque in Kocha Risaldar area claimed 63 lives along with more than 200 injuries.

On October 27, 2020, a timed device killed at least eight madrasha students and about 120 others wounded at White Mosque located in Dir Colony on Ring Road area of the city.

Earlier on June 21, 2013, Suicide bomber killed 15 at a Peshawar mosque.
