Public transports to be restricted to half of capacity from next week

Bangladesh is going to restrict passengers at public transports to 50 percent of capacity in a bid to curb the spread of Omicron variant of deadly coronavirus. The decision will come into effect a week later, said Health Minister Zahid Maleque.

The infection rate is rising in the country for more than a week. Bangladesh reported multiple cases of Omicron variant so far. As a result the government came up with such decision, the minister said.

Zahid Maleque disclosed the matter while talking to the media in the capital on Tuesday.

More than 54 lakh 48 thousand people have died so far of coronavirus across the world. The number of cases surpassed 29 crore 23 lakh.

On Monday, Bangladesh reported 674 Covid-19 infections with four more deaths linked to it in 24 hours.

The daily case positivity rose to 3.37 per cent from Sunday’s 2.91 per cent during the period, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

The fresh numbers took the country’s total fatalities to 28,081 while the caseload mounted to 15,87,140.
