RAB detain one over abduction of expat in Malaysia

The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested a person from Barguna over alleged abduction of a Bangladeshi migrant worker named Sohel Miah in Malaysia.

The arrestee is identified as Nasir Uddin, 38, hailed from Bamna Upazila in the district, said deputy director of RAB-8 (Barishal) Major Mohammad Jahangir Alam in a media briefing on Thursday.

Nasir was arrested from Barguna’s Kholpatua area on Tuesday (October 4) and later handed over to the Ghatail Police Station in Tangail, he said.

Meanwhile, Ghatail police yesterday (October 5) produced Nasir before the court and sought a seven-day remand but the court rejected the plea and sent him to jail.

RAB also traced Tk 5.0 lakh in a bank account of the detainee which is believed to be received as ransom from the abductors of Sohel in Malaysia.

Earlier, Ghatail police sought help to RAB-8 in this regard as the bank account the money was deposited to was in Barishal.

Sohel's brother-in-law, Belal Hossain, told the media: "There is no news of Sohel yet which making his elderly mother and the entire family very anxious."

In the meantime, Bangladesh High Commission in Kuala Lumpur informed that the mission has given highest importance to the matter.

They are in constant touch with the Malaysian and Bangladesh police administrations, High Commission sources said.

According to earlier developments, the abductors picked Sohel near from his residence in Tamiljaya neighborhood of Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia, on September 25.

On September 28, Sohel's relative Billal Hossain filed a case with Ghatail Police Station in Tangail in this connection.

Meanwhile, one of Sohel’s relative living in Malaysian lodged a complaint with Johor Bahru Police Station in Malaysia on October 2, 2022.
