Rare red coral kukri found in Bangladesh

A rare species of snake was found in the northern district of Panchagarh in Bangladesh on Monday. Zoologists say this is the first time this species of snake has been seen in Bangladesh and only 20-22 times in the whole world.

This species of snake is commonly known as 'Red Coral Kukri'.

The snake is now undergoing treatment at the Rajshahi Snake Rescue and Conservation Center.

However, it cannot be said before the next 72 hours whether it is safe of danger.

M Monirul H Khan, Associate Professor, Department of Zoology, Jahangirnagar University, confirmed that the snake found in Panchagarh was indeed a Red Coral Kukri Snake.

According to BBC, pictures and videos were sent to him after the snake was caught.

He identified the snake by looking at the shape of the snake's head ,the shape of its face, by its posture and the type of movement.

However, he said that detailed information about the Red Coral Kukri Snake is hard to find.

The snake was last seen in Kheri district of Uttar Pradesh in 2019.

He said, "This is a very rare species of snake. This snake has never been seen before in Bangladesh. And this snake has been seen only 20 to 22 times in the whole world."

It is native to the Himalayan region of India, but is commonly found in Uttar Pradesh and northeastern India.

Associate Professor M Monirul H Khan said that these snakes are usually of reddish bright orange in color.

 The snake is mildly venomous.

Snakes of this species are nocturnal and spend most of their time under the ground.

The length of the snake found indicates that it is a full grown snake. That is why experts think that there may be more snakes of this species in the vicinity of Panchagarh.

The scientific name of the snake species is Oligodon kheriensis.

On Monday morning, construction workers were digging in an under-construction building near a market in Boda upazila of Panchagarh district. During the digging a few snakes came out.

Fearing that there might be more snakes inside, they quickly called the wildlife conservation worker and snake rescuer Md. Shahidul Islam.
