Reminiscing the inspirational Muhammad Khasru

February 19, 2021 marks the second death anniversary of Muhammad Khasru, one of the pioneers of the Bangladesh film society movement. He died on this day in 2019 while undergoing treatment at the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) of Ibrahim Cardiac Hospital in the country’s capital.

Khasru was born in Hooghly district of India. His ancestral home is in Keraniganj, Dhaka. He was associated with the film society movement for a long time. Apart from formal education, he was very well-read and had in-depth education. He took on a plethora of roles, whenever whatever was required and got in to the shoes of a writer, editor and sometimes a skilled organizer.

Muhammad Khasru is one of the founders of 'Pakistan Film Society' inaugurated in 1963. He was the editor of 'Dhrupadi' and 'Film’ both leading Bengali film magazines. He has also written several books. He maintained the continuity of the process of organizing cultural film exhibitions.

Muhammad Khasru interviewed Ritwik Ghatak, an iconic film personality of the subcontinent which was published in “Dhrupadi” magazine. The interview was later reprinted in various newspapers across the subcontinent.

Muhammad Khasru worked as an Assistant Director to Indian film director Shri Rajan Tarafdar during the making of the Indo-Bangladesh co-production 'Palank' in 1975. Khasru inspired many filmmakers of Bangladesh through his movements.

Muhammad Khasru was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award for his 50 years of contribution to the development of film in Bangladesh. Besides, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Bangladesh Film Society Movement, he was given 'Shuborno Jayanti' and Lifetime Achievement Award from Dhaka University Film Society in 2017.
