Sahara Khatun's 2nd death anniversary today

Today marks the second death anniversary of former home minister and Awami League Presidium Member Advocate Sahara Khatun. 

On this occassion, different political, social and cultural organizations will pay homage to Sahara Khatun by placing floral wreath on her grave at Banani Graveyard. 

The veteran politcian was the sitting lawmaker from Dhaka-18 constituency when she died at the age of 77 while undergoing treatment at a Bangkok hospital on July 9, 2020.

She was elected lawmaker from the capital for three times with Awami League (AL) ticket. 

Sahara was made the home minister as the first female in the country's history in 2009 and later served as the posts and telecommunications minister.

Born on March 1, 1943 at Kurmitola in the city, Sahara Khatun joined politics since her student life. After her debut in law profession, she actively joined the AL.  

She served the Mohila Awami League as its city unit's women affairs secretary and vice-president and central committees' office secretary and general secretary. 

Later, Sahara joined the AL and served the party as assistant law affairs secretary and law affairs secretary. She was a presidium member of the ruling AL until her death. 

Sahara Khatun was active in different democratic movements, including the 1969 Mass Uprising, anti Yahya-Ayub movement, liberation struggle and anti autocratic movement.
