Noted actress Sarah Begum Kobori has died of Covid-19.
Kobori’s son Shaker Chishtee confirmed the matter to media.
She breathed her last at Sheikh Russel National Gastroliver Institute & Hospital in the capital around 12.20am Friday night. She was 70.
Earlier, Kobori was put on life support on Thursday after situation worsened while undergoing treatment at Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital.
Earlier on April 8, she was shifted to the hospital from Kurmitola General Hospital as all ICU beds have already been occupied in the latter facility.
On April 5, the actress-turned-politician was admitted to Kurmitola General Hospital after she had tested coronavirus positive on the day. She also complained of some other complications.
Kobori received the Bangladesh National Film Award for Best Actress for her role in the film Sareng Bou (1978). She was elected as a member of parliament from the Narayanganj-4 constituency as a Awami League candidate in 2008 and served until 2014.
She stepped into the field of cinema as an amateur artist at the age of 13. In 1964, she acted in her first film, Sutorang under Subhash Dutta's direction, and coincidentally after 40 years, in 2004, Subhash Dutta acted in the movie Aaina under Kabori's direction.
The actress acted in several films such as Sujon Sokhi and Sareng Bou with Farooque in the 1970s. She also performed with Bulbul Ahmed in Devdas. She acted another important role in Titash Ekti Nadir Naam directed by Ritwik Ghatak, an Indian filmmaker. She also acted in an Urdu film Bahana by Zahir Raihan with co-actor Rahman.
She also worked with several actors including Razzak, Alamgir, Sohel Rana, Ujjal, Wasim, Khan Ataur Rahman, Golam Mustafa, Anwar Hossain and A.T.M. Shamsuzzaman.
