Is Sohel Taj returning to politics?

Giving a further boost to the speculations that he would return to politics, Sohel Taj has visited the political office of the president of ruling Awami League in Dhanmondi of Dhaka.

The former state minister for home affairs went there on Thursday evening, flanked by more than 100 supporters.

He also held talks with some senior leaders of the party during his stay there.

However, when asked by a news outlet if he was mulling resuming his political career, Sohel Taj hinted that he would do so.

“I was born to a political family. Politics is in my blood. I was never beyond politics. But for some days, I was busy with personal matters,” he said.

“I’ve come to the party office and will try to do so regularly,” said the son of the country’s first prime minister, Tajuddin Ahmad.

Sohel Taj was elected to the House in the 2008 general election and later given the role of the junior minister.

But he resigned on April 23, 2012, some five months after his appointment to the cabinet. He became a stranger in politics ever since. His sister Simin Hossain Rimi is the lawmaker from the same seat (Gazipur-4).

Talking of the party, he said, “I’ve long been stating that if called up and needed, I’m always there.

“I’ll be on the streets again like in the BNP-Jamaat tenure in 2001. I’m determined on it,” he added.

In recent time, he made similar statement.

Earlier this month, his sister Mehzabin Ahmed posted on Facebook that Sohel Taj would come into the party’s leadership. But neither he nor Awami League leaders clarified the matter.

The national council of the party is scheduled to be held by December.
