A violent clash erupted between students of Daffodil International University and City University in Ashulia, Savar, early Monday, following a minor altercation the previous evening.
The confrontation, which lasted from around midnight to 4:30am, saw repeated attacks, vandalism, and arson—causing extensive damage, particularly to the City University campus. Witnesses and students alleged that law enforcement failed to intervene during the unrest.
According to witnesses, the conflict began in the evening when a City University student, riding a motorcycle near Bachelor Paradise Hostel, accidentally spat on a Daffodil student. The incident sparked an argument between students of the two universities.
Around 9pm, a group of 40–50 City University students, armed with local weapons and bricks, reportedly attacked and vandalized a Daffodil University student residence.
As footage of the assault circulated on social media, more than a thousand Daffodil students gathered and marched toward City University, escalating the situation into a large-scale confrontation.
The Daffodil proctorial team initially struggled to bring the situation under control.
After midnight, Daffodil students stormed the City University campus, confining students inside and vandalizing property. They allegedly looted computers and other valuables from the administrative building, set fire to three buses and a private car, and damaged at least five more vehicles. Crude bombs were reportedly detonated to spread panic.
At least 50 students from both universities were injured in the violence.
By around 4:30am, parts of the City University campus were still burning despite administrative efforts to calm the situation. Students continued to chase and counter-chase each other, leading to further damage.
Ashulia Police Station Duty Officer SI Habibur Rahman said, “The situation is now under control. Officers are deployed on site.”
