Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, emphasized that if his party comes to power, relations between Bangladesh and India will be based on mutual respect and understanding.
peaking at a view-exchange event on Wednesday during his week-long visit to the United States, Dr. Rahman underscored the importance of respecting neighbors, regardless of differences in size or power.
Dr. Rahman acknowledged India`s significant size, wealth, and manpower, stating, "India is 26 times larger than Bangladesh, and we respect them for their position.
However, they must also respect our small territory and the existence of nearly 180 million Bangladeshis. This is our demand for a balanced relationship."
He highlighted that mutual respect between the two nations would not only improve bilateral ties but also enhance their recognition on the global stage.
On the issue of religious rights, Dr. Rahman reaffirmed his party`s commitment to ensuring equal rights for people of all faiths.
He rejected attempts to create divisions based on majority or minority status, calling instead for unity.
He stated, “We oppose any attempt to expel individuals or close institutions forcibly. We seek to re-establish the tradition of harmonious coexistence, which has been a hallmark of our culture and civilization for generations.”
Dr. Rahman’s comments come in the wake of increased discussions around Bangladesh`s internal religious dynamics and its foreign relations, particularly with India.
