Hamza Dewan Choudhury has ended his 21-year association with Leicester City, leaving the club where he spent nine years with the senior team. With the summer transfer window set to close the following day, the Bangladesh international has left his boyhood club to join Sheffield United on an initial one-year deal.
The move sees Choudhury switch from a third-tier club to a second-tier side in English football.
Derby County had emerged as a potential destination for Choudhury as recently as last week. However, after that move fell through at the final stage, Sheffield United stepped in to sign the midfielder.
Choudhury spent the 2024-25 season on loan at Sheffield United before returning to Leicester last summer. He has now made a permanent return to Bramall Lane, rejoining the club he represented last season.
With only one year remaining on his Leicester contract, Choudhury effectively joins Sheffield United on a free transfer.
The midfielder is delighted to be back at his former club.
“I’m very excited,” he said. “It’s somewhere I really enjoyed my time last time I was here, so I’m really happy to get it over the line,” Choudhury said.
Choudhury also has an established relationship with Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder. He worked under Wilder briefly during his time at Watford and then again last season at Sheffield United.
Leaving Leicester represents a major change for Choudhury and his family after spending almost two decades at the club.
“It’s a big change for me. I’ve been at Leicester for 21 years now, so it’s a change for me and my family, but one I’m really looking forward to and hopefully we can have a big season here,” he said.
Choudhury has also kept in touch with his former Sheffield United teammates.
“I’ve kept in contact with all the boys. We had a great group when I was here, and we’ve all stayed in touch over the last year to 18 months. It’s nice to see all the familiar faces again,” he added.
Choudhury joined Leicester’s academy at the age of seven. After progressing through the club’s youth system, he made his senior debut in September 2017, coming on in Leicester’s Carabao Cup victory over Liverpool.
Two months later, he made his Premier League debut as a substitute against Tottenham Hotspur.
Choudhury made 165 appearances for Leicester across all competitions, scoring three goals. He was also part of the Leicester side that won the FA Cup in 2021.
