Test cricket was once a source of frustration for Bangladesh, but that picture has gradually begun to change. The latest evidence came after their series draw against Australia, which saw Bangladesh climb to sixth place in the ICC Test rankings for the first time in their history.

Although Bangladesh suffered an innings-and-51-run defeat to Australia in the second Test, their historic victory in the series opener helped Najmul Hossain Shanto’s side rise three places in the rankings. In the latest standings, Bangladesh have 1,878 points from 24 matches, with a rating of 78.

Sri Lanka, Pakistan, West Indies and Zimbabwe are ranked below Bangladesh. Australia remain at the top with a rating of 126, followed by South Africa on 119. New Zealand, India and England complete the top five.

Bangladesh’s historic rise came after they drew the two-match series 1-1 against the world’s top-ranked Test side, Australia. Before the latest rankings update, Bangladesh were ranked ninth.

Bangladesh secured a historic nine-wicket victory in the first Test in Darwin. It was their first-ever Test win on Australian soil and only their second Test victory against Australia.
