Ayub Bachchu was a legendary figure in Bangla band music. As a singer, guitarist, lyricist, composer and music director, he made an immense contribution to the country’s music scene. The popular artist was born on August 16, 1962, in Chattogram. Had he been alive today, Bachchu, who enriched Bangla band music during his 56-year life, would have turned 64.
Bachchu began his journey in band music in 1978 with the band Feelings. In 1983, he moved to Dhaka with just Tk 600. Through talent, hard work and unwavering determination, he gradually established himself as one of the country’s most popular rock stars. He later served as the lead guitarist of Souls for nearly a decade.
In 1990, Bachchu formed his own band, LRB. The band was initially named Little River Band before becoming known as Love Runs Blind, or LRB.
Although widely known as a prince of rock music, Bachchu’s musical repertoire was diverse. From modern songs and folk music to playback singing for films, he captivated audiences with his distinctive voice, compositions and masterful guitar playing.
Behind his cheerful and energetic presence on stage was a deeply emotional and sensitive person. According to those close to him, Bachchu was warm-hearted, emotional and highly sensitive. Although he rarely spoke openly about his pain, his emotions found expression through his songs and compositions.
The death of his mother was one of the biggest blows of his life. In various conversations and interviews, he spoke about his deep love for his mother. Her death left a lasting wound in his heart. He was also deeply affected when fellow band members left the group. Bachchu did not see his bandmates merely as fellow musicians; he considered them part of his family.
Bachchu’s greatest love was the guitar. He often described it as his first and last love. He devoted a significant part of his life to collecting and playing guitars.
Throughout his long musical career, Bachchu gave listeners countless timeless and popular songs. Tracks including Shei Tumi, Hashte Dekho, Ekhon Onek Raat, Rupali Guitar, Meye, Ami Koshto Pete Bhalobashi, Sukher Ei Prithibi, Ferari Mon, Ural Debo Akashe, Bangladesh, Ami Baro Mash Tomay Bhalobashi, Ek Akasher Tara, Shei Tara Bhora Rate, Kobita, Ami To Preme Poreini, Tin Purush, Jeyona Chole Bondhu and Bela Sheshe Fire Eshe remain popular among listeners to this day.
On August 16, 2018, Bachchu celebrated his final birthday at an intimate gathering with close friends and family. Just two months later, on October 18, the legendary figure of Bangla band music passed away suddenly.
Nearly eight years after his death, Ayub Bachchu’s music, songs and iconic guitar melodies continue to live on in the hearts of music lovers. His creations will continue to immortalise him in the history of Bangla music for generations to come.
