Since its release, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, starring Tom Holland, has been rewriting the box office record books. The film surpassed the $1 billion mark worldwide in just six days, making it one of the fastest movies in cinematic history to reach the milestone.
Produced by Sony and Marvel, the superhero blockbuster marks Tom Holland`s fourth outing as Spider-Man. Until now, only Avengers: Endgame (2019) had achieved such a feat, grossing nearly $1.2 billion during its opening weekend.
Brand New Day has also dominated the North American box office. Within just four days of release, it earned $407 million, becoming the fastest film ever to cross the $400 million mark domestically. It also set a new record for the highest-grossing Monday in box office history, collecting $47 million in a single day. The previous record was held by Black Panther (2018), which earned $40 million on its biggest Monday. Internationally, the film has added another $645.8 million to its total.
The record-breaking streak began from the opening weekend. The film debuted with $360 million in North America and $932 million worldwide, setting a new record for the biggest domestic opening in history and the second-largest global opening ever. It also established new benchmarks with $72 million from preview screenings and $169.8 million on its opening day.
With overwhelmingly positive audience reception and no major blockbuster competition in the coming weeks, industry analysts believe the film is well on its way to surpassing the $2 billion mark. So far, only seven films have ever achieved that milestone, leading many to predict that Brand New Day will secure a place among the highest-grossing films of all time before it completes its theatrical run.
Marvel Studios president and producer Kevin Feige said, “I never imagined that Endgame`s opening box office record could be broken. But our 38th Marvel Cinematic Universe film has done exactly that. Waking up on Monday morning and seeing where we stand is truly overwhelming.”
Feige added that the film`s extraordinary success also bodes well for Avengers: Doomsday, which is scheduled for release this December. The upcoming film will reunite several of Marvel`s biggest superheroes, with the biggest surprise being Robert Downey Jr.`s return—not as Iron Man, but as the iconic villain Doctor Doom.
“When a shared universe works the way it`s supposed to, this is the result,” Feige said.
Brand New Day is the fourth film of 2026 to join the $1 billion club, following The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Michael, and Toy Story 5. Meanwhile, Christopher Nolan`s The Odyssey has already earned $912 million worldwide and is widely expected to cross the $1 billion mark in the coming days.
The year 2026 has already become a remarkable one for Hollywood. Even before the end of August, it has produced the highest number of billion-dollar films since the pandemic. The all-time record remains 2019, when nine films crossed the billion-dollar milestone. Since then, no year has seen more than three films achieve the feat.
According to box office analysts, if Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey continue their strong performances, North America`s summer box office could once again exceed $4 billion in ticket sales. With highly anticipated releases such as Dune 3 and Avengers: Doomsday still to come later this year, total North American box office revenue for 2026 could also surpass $10 billion.
