Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni has compared BNP Chairman and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman with National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, saying the BNP leader is a figure who represents hope for the country.

Speaking at a discussion at the National Press Club on Monday, Moni said, “Our Nazrul is Tarique Rahman.” He made the remarks at a programme organised by the Jatiyatabadi Sangskritik Dal to mark Nazrul’s 50th death anniversary.

Moni said Nazrul remains alive through his writings and works, while Tarique Rahman should also be recognised for his role in the country.

He defended the government’s handling of recent challenges, including the rise in oil prices and the electricity crisis. Referring to long queues at petrol stations, he said the situation improved within a few days and questioned why some people were creating confusion over the issue.

Moni also urged people not to expect the Tarique Rahman government to solve every problem immediately.

“Do not expect Tarique Rahman to solve all problems in seven days,” he said, urging people to give the government time to address the country’s problems.

He also accused some groups of creating problems over electricity shortages and criticised what he described as double standards in protests.

Moni said Tarique Rahman had taken steps to support industries, create employment opportunities and develop skills among young people.

Comparing Tarique Rahman with former president Ziaur Rahman, Moni said both could be described as “Nazrul” figures and warned that Bangladesh would suffer if the current leadership were lost.

He ended his speech by calling for unity and saying, “We will all stay together, InshaAllah. We will listen to the flute of this Nazrul.”
