Advocate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, a member of the BNP’s National Standing Committee, the party’s highest policymaking body, has been appointed acting secretary general of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
The party announced the appointment in a press release issued on Thursday by BNP Assistant Office Secretary Muhammad Munir Hossain.
According to the statement, Rizvi was appointed acting secretary general in accordance with Article 7(B)(6) of the BNP constitution.
Earlier, on August 13, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir resigned as BNP secretary general and a member of the National Standing Committee shortly after submitting his nomination papers to the Election Commission. Following his resignation, the post of the party’s secretary general fell vacant.
After the BNP came to power, Rizvi was appointed an adviser to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman with the rank of a minister on February 17. He had also been serving as the BNP’s senior joint secretary general.
Rizvi’s ancestral home is in Kurigram. He holds a master’s degree in geography and environmental studies and history from Rajshahi University. He also earned a bachelor’s degree in law.
Rizvi began his political career after completing higher secondary education through the left-leaning Revolutionary Students Union. He served as general secretary of the organisation’s Rajshahi Government College unit.
After the formation of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, Rizvi joined the BNP’s student wing. He later became publicity secretary of its Rajshahi University unit and was subsequently elected general secretary of the unit. He also served as central president of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal.
In the 1989 Rajshahi University Central Students’ Union (RUCSU) election, Rizvi was elected vice-president (VP), a position he held until 1990.
At the BNP’s sixth national council on March 19, 2016, Rizvi was elected senior joint secretary general of the party.
In the 2026 national election, he served as member secretary of the BNP’s election management committee.
As part of the party’s organisational restructuring, Rizvi was appointed a member of the BNP’s National Standing Committee on August 15, 2026. He has now been given the additional responsibility of acting secretary general.
