Mirza Fakhrul elected as Bangladesh’s 23rd president

BNP candidate Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has been elected the country’s 23rd president. He secured 255 votes, while Oli Ahmed, the candidate of the 11-party alliance, received 88 votes.

Chief Election Commissioner A.M.M. Nasir Uddin declared Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir the winner.

Voting was held continuously from 2pm to 5pm on Thursday in the session chamber of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban. All members of parliament took part in the election.

Vote counting began in the parliamentary chamber immediately after polling ended at 5pm. Officials from the Jatiya Sangsad Secretariat and the Election Commission Secretariat counted the ballots, after which the results were announced.
