Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) has taken an initiative to further extend the operating hours of the metro rail service at night. From next month, train services are expected to run 20 to 30 minutes longer, with the last train departing at 11pm.
DMTCL also plans to reduce the current 20-minute gap between the final trains to seven or eight minutes.
According to DMTCL sources, additional drivers or operators will be required to extend metro rail services at night. The recruitment process for new operators has already been completed, and their training will continue until August 26. Once the training is complete, the new operators will begin operating the trains.
Authorities are also examining how maintenance and other preparatory work will be carried out if metro rail services are extended at night.
Earlier, metro rail operating hours were extended by 20 minutes from June 7. However, the number of passengers increased by around 10,000 during the extended period, leaving the metro rail service heavily crowded.
The DMTCL has therefore taken another initiative to extend operating hours, particularly to cope with the increased passenger pressure on the final trains at night.
