Woman injured in state minister’s car accident dies

Firoza Begum, 55, a pedestrian who was critically injured after being hit by a car carrying State Minister for Public Administration and Food Abdul Bari and his wife, has died.

She died while undergoing treatment at TMSS Medical College Hospital in Bogura at around 12:30pm on Friday.

The accident occurred around 9am in the Haripur area, east of Kichak Boro Bridge in Shibganj upazila of Bogura. Firoza Begum was crossing the road when the accident took place. The driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle while trying to avoid hitting her, causing the car to veer off the road and end up in a paddy field.

After the accident, pedestrians and local residents rescued the state minister, his wife and the driver. Abdul Bari sustained injuries to his knee and both legs and received initial treatment. His wife, Nazma Begum, was unharmed. The driver was also injured.

Firoza Begum was the wife of late Nizam Uddin of Gopinathpur village in Shibganj upazila of Bogura.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bogura Sadar Police Station Md Ibrahim Hossain confirmed Firoza Begum’s death to Samakal.

Abdul Bari was travelling to Joypurhat on a two-day official visit. Following the accident, he was taken to his residence in Kalai municipality, where he is currently staying.

Speaking about the accident, State Minister Abdul Bari said, “We narrowly escaped the accident. The car went off the road and came to a stop in a field. I sustained pain in my knee and both legs.”

Kalai Police Station OC Saidul Islam said the accident occurred when a pedestrian was crossing the road as the minister’s car was travelling to Joypurhat. Police went to the scene after being informed and rescued those involved. The state minister sustained minor injuries, he said.

He added that a female pedestrian was critically injured in the accident and was receiving treatment at Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogura. The state minister is currently staying at his residence in Kalai.
