Bogura hospital clash leaves 12 injured; interns go on strike

Medical services at Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College (SHZMC) Hospital in Bogura have been disrupted after interns began an indefinite work abstention following a clash with relatives of a patient who died during treatment.

The interns stopped work from midnight Tuesday, citing concerns over their safety after 12 people were injured in clashes at the hospital earlier that night.

The trouble began after Abdul Malek, a resident of Rajapur in Bogura city, died while receiving treatment.

His relatives alleged that he died because of wrong treatment, leading to an argument with three interns.

The situation escalated when the relatives and some outsiders accompanying them allegedly attacked the interns.

Police and hospital authorities intervened and brought the situation under control after nearly three hours.

Police later arrested six relatives of the deceased over their alleged involvement in the attack on the doctors, said Ibrahim Ali, officer-in-charge of Bogura Sadar Police Station.

Among those arrested are Nafiul Islam, convener of Ward No. 18 of the Bogura city unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, and its joint convener Pranto.

Both are receiving treatment at SHZMC Hospital under police custody.

The other four detainees have been kept at the police station.

The interns’ work abstention has disrupted regular medical services at the hospital, with the doctors demanding a safe working environment.
