BNP Acting Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on Tuesday said the party remains committed to fulfilling its promises to the people, as BNP marked its 48th founding anniversary amid renewed emphasis on its political ideals and democratic struggle.
“BNP has always stood by its commitment to the people and remains steadfast in fulfilling the promises it makes to them,” Rizvi told journalists after paying tribute at the graves of party founder Ziaur Rahman and former prime minister Khaleda Zia.
Rizvi said BNP is continuing its political journey by upholding the ideals and philosophy on which Ziaur Rahman founded the party 48 years ago.
He said the party was established with commitments to development, production and building a self-reliant Bangladesh, and credited Ziaur Rahman with initiatives in areas including education, culture, foreign policy, law and order, employment and overseas labour.
Rizvi also focused on BNP’s role in movements for democracy, saying political rights and civil liberties had been repeatedly curtailed under authoritarian rule.
He credited Ziaur Rahman with creating space for multiparty democracy after the formation of BAKSAL in 1975 and said the expansion of media outlets and opportunities for journalists to work were also among the contributions of Ziaur Rahman and Khaleda Zia.
Recalling the anti-Ershad movement, Rizvi said Khaleda Zia led a nine-year struggle to restore democracy without compromising with those in power.
He said Khaleda Zia remained committed to the party’s principles despite years of imprisonment, persecution and political pressure, describing BNP as a party that keeps its promises to the people.
Rizvi also referred to the movement against Sheikh Hasina and said Khaleda Zia remained a key source of inspiration for the opposition even while she was imprisoned, while her eldest son Tarique Rahman continued political activities at the time.
