National Citizens Party (NCP) spokesperson Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain on Monday said the party has a positive view of the Makkah Pact and is closely monitoring developments surrounding the trilateral defence agreement.
Speaking at a press conference at the airport after returning to Bangladesh from Umrah, Asif said the party’s subcommittee is following the issue closely.
The Makkah Pact, also known as the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement, is a trilateral defence arrangement involving Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkey.
At the press conference, Asif also raised concerns over what he described as the resurgence of a syndicate linked to the ruling BNP. He claimed airfares to Saudi Arabia had declined during the interim government but increased after the BNP came to power.
He further alleged that the country was facing continuing gas and electricity shortages, while prices and extortion had increased in different sectors since the election.
“The people are in a state of despair,” Asif said, calling on the government to take immediate steps to address the problems.
