BNP Acting Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has called for impartial investigations into every case of enforced disappearance, saying no person or institution should be beyond the reach of the law.
In a message issued ahead of the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances on August 30, Rizvi said uncovering the truth, ensuring credible investigations and holding those responsible accountable are necessary to establish justice.
He expressed solidarity with victims of enforced disappearance and their families, saying they deserve truth, justice and accountability.
Rizvi described enforced disappearance as a serious violation of human freedom, dignity, justice and the right to life. He said families forced to spend years waiting for information about missing relatives should not have to endure such uncertainty.
According to the BNP leader, enforced disappearance has been used as a means of political repression and suppressing dissent in Bangladesh. He alleged that opposition leaders and activists, human rights defenders and others who expressed dissent have been among the victims.
He said many families still have no clear information about the whereabouts or fate of their loved ones, describing their prolonged wait as a major responsibility for the country.
Rizvi also called for victims and their families to be guaranteed the right to know the truth, receive justice and compensation, and obtain appropriate rehabilitation.
“BNP will stand beside them in the struggle to establish justice, human dignity and democratic rights,” he said.
