The death toll from flash floods and landslides along the Nepal-Tibet border has reached at least 165, while more than 1,300 people remain missing or unaccounted for, according to figures released by authorities in Nepal and China.
Nepal’s disaster agency said Thursday that 823 people were still unaccounted for, including at least 579 Nepali and foreign tourists. China separately reported 558 missing people, nearly half of them foreigners.
The figures are expected to change as rescue teams continue searching and authorities work to identify victims and determine who remains missing.
Nepal is a major destination for international tourists, trekkers and climbers, with thousands travelling through the Himalayan region each year.
Among those reported missing are citizens from India, Ukraine, Australia, Malaysia, the United Kingdom, South Korea, Japan, South Africa, the United States, Portugal, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Canada and Singapore.
India has reported one of the largest numbers of missing nationals. According to a Nepal Tourism Board list, 142 Indians travelling with three tour companies were still unaccounted for.
Ukraine’s foreign ministry said Nepalese authorities believed 53 Ukrainian nationals were missing, including a group of 46 tourists.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said 34 Australians were missing. Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said more than 50 Malaysians in Nepal could not be reached.
The United Kingdom reported 12 missing citizens linked to one trekking company, while two more Britons were reportedly among a group missing in the Rasuwagadhi area.
South Korea said nine hydropower workers in Rasuwa district were out of contact. Japan reported five missing nationals, while New Zealand said five citizens remained unaccounted for.
Three US citizens were listed as missing by the Nepal Tourism Board, while a trekking company said eight Americans were among a larger missing group.
Authorities have warned that the overall numbers may rise or fall as the search continues. Confusion during a major disaster, possible double-counting of people with dual nationalities and the identification of recovered bodies can all affect the figures.
In China, authorities said 298 Chinese nationals were missing. The country`s overall missing figure also included 260 foreign nationals whose nationalities had not yet been identified.
Rescue and recovery efforts are continuing in areas hit by the floods and landslides, with authorities trying to locate missing tourists, workers and local residents.
