Women students at the University of Dhaka will now have an extra hour before their residential hall gates close, with the university extending the closing time from 10 pm to 11 pm.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the university’s Syndicate, the institution’s highest policy-making body, on Monday. Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Professor Mohammed Almujaddade Alfasane confirmed the decision.
The meeting, chaired by Vice-Chancellor Professor ABM Obaidul Islam, also approved disciplinary action against four teachers over separate allegations.
Three teachers Professor M Wahiduzzaman Chan and Professor Muhammad Mahbubur Rahman of the Institute of Education and Research, and Professor Mashiur Rahman of the Department of Sociology were suspended over allegations of opposing the July mass uprising.
The university has formed tribunals against them based on recommendations from investigation committees.
Mashiur Rahman rejected the allegations, saying the decision undermined the tradition of free thought at the university. He said he had not made any remarks against students during the movement.
Muhammad Mahbubur Rahman also expressed disappointment, claiming that he had supported students during the July movement and had even gone to a police station to seek bail for a student from his department. He alleged that some of the allegations against him related to incidents from seven or eight years ago.
Wahiduzzaman Chan did not respond to repeated attempts to contact him.
Meanwhile, Associate Professor Md Ziaur Rahman (Sayeem Rana) of the Department of Music was suspended over allegations that he did not meet the educational qualifications required in the recruitment notice. An investigation committee has been formed to examine the matter.
Ziaur Rahman holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Islamic Studies and MPhil and PhD degrees in music. However, the university’s recruitment notice for the Department of Music required candidates to have bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music.
