The father and elder brother of Siddhartha Das, one of the two suspects arrested in the Rangpur family killings, were released after several hours of questioning by the Detective Branch (DB) of police on Saturday night.
Siddhartha’s father Binoy Das and elder brother Partha Das were taken to the DB office on Central Road on Saturday afternoon. They were released around 11:30pm after signing written undertakings, said Rangpur Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner Sonaton Chakroborty.
Binoy Das said police questioned them about different aspects of the killings. “We told the police only what we had already said to the media,” he said after his release.
The questioning came amid the ongoing investigation into the deaths of former Rangpur Zilla School teacher Ganapati Chakraborty, 65, his wife Pritilata Chakraborty Bala, 50, their daughter Agami Chakraborty Prarthi, 25, and son Ayush Chakraborty Priyam, 12.
The four were found dead inside their locked home in Machhuapara, Rangpur city, on August 22. Police said they had been strangled.
Mugdha Das, 23, and Siddhartha Das, 19, both from the same area, were arrested the following day in connection with the killings.
The two suspects later gave confessional statements before a court under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. Two witnesses, Shimanto and Bidyut Das, also recorded statements before the court.
The investigation remains underway as police continue examining the circumstances surrounding the killings and the evidence collected in the case.
