A rickshaw snatching attempt near the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban in Dhaka claimed the life of a government primary school headteacher on Saturday morning after she fell onto the road and suffered a severe head injury.
The deceased was identified as Ranjina Parvin, headteacher of Bagbari Balika Government Primary School in Bogura.
Police said Ranjina had come to Dhaka from Bogura for medical treatment at Islamia Eye Hospital in Farmgate. After getting off a bus at Gabtoli early in the morning, she was travelling by rickshaw towards the hospital.
Around 6:30am, when the rickshaw reached the South Plaza area of the parliament complex, a motorcycle carrying two people approached from behind. The riders allegedly snatched Ranjina`s bag, causing her to fall from the rickshaw.
She sustained a critical head injury in the fall. She was taken to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
Police have launched an investigation to identify the motorcycle and those involved in the snatching attempt.
Tejgaon Division Deputy Commissioner of Police (DC) Ibn-e-Mizan said police, along with the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit, Detective Branch (DB) and other agencies, were working to identify the suspects.
“We hope to identify and arrest them very soon,” he said.
