The High Court has deferred the verdict in the child Asiya rape and murder case in Magura to August 31 following a time petition from the prosecution.
The High Court passed the order on Monday.
Earlier, a High Court bench comprising Justice Bhishmadev Chakraborty and Justice K. M. Rasheduzzaman Raja had fixed Monday for delivering the verdict.
Hitu Sheikh, the accused in the case, has been sentenced to death. The hearing on the death reference and appeal began on August 11.
On March 6, 2025, Asiya went to visit her elder sister’s in-laws’ home in Nij Nanduali village of Magura. There, she was raped and assaulted by her sister’s father-in-law, Hitu Sheikh.
She was transferred from Faridpur Medical College Hospital to Dhaka due to severe blood loss. Asiya later died on March 13 while undergoing treatment at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH).
The Magura Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal acquitted three other accused in the case.
