Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has acknowledged the economic difficulties facing people in Iran as the United States steps up sanctions aimed at putting further pressure on Tehran.
“We have many problems in society right now,” Pezeshkian said in a speech broadcast on Iranian state television on Sunday.
He said the government was working to reduce the impact of those problems.
His comments came days after Washington announced a new sanctions campaign and said it wanted to put enough pressure on Iran to bring about the “collapse” of the regime.
Pezeshkian said the latest US measures had pushed Iran into what he described as a full-scale economic, military and security conflict.
He also referred to US President Donald Trump’s description of the sanctions as the most severe pressure yet imposed on Iran.
Economic problems have been a major source of public anger in Iran in recent years.
Inflation, sharp movements in the exchange rate and falling purchasing power have contributed to repeated protests.
A protest movement that began in December last year over rising living costs later grew into nationwide demonstrations against the government.
Iranian authorities said more than 3,000 people died during the unrest and accused the United States and Israel of helping to fuel the violence. Foreign-based rights groups, however, accused Iranian security forces of carrying out a broad crackdown that killed thousands.
Pezeshkian said his government was working to tackle inflation, unemployment and other economic problems.
“We are striving with all our hearts to overcome inflation, livelihood problems, unemployment, and to secure the future of the people,” he said, adding that Iranians should be able to live with dignity and pride.
