Former minister Dr Dipu Moni has been granted 12-hour parole following an application by her daughter, Tani Deepavali Nawaz, after the death of her husband, Barrister Tawfique Nawaz.

She will be on parole from 6am to 6pm on Thursday (August 20), Munshiganj Additional District Magistrate Md Rezaul Karim confirmed.

He said Dipu Moni was granted parole following an application by her lawyer. An earlier application had sought four days of parole.

Meanwhile, Deepavali had been going around Munshiganj since Wednesday morning seeking her mother’s release, while her father’s body remained in Dhaka. His burial is expected to take place after Dipu Moni is released on parole.

Dipu Moni’s lawyer, Gazi Faisal Islam, also confirmed the matter. He said Dipu Moni’s daughter entered the jail around noon on Wednesday to meet her mother. After leaving the jail, she went to the district administration office at around 1:45pm to submit the parole application. The application was submitted to Additional District Magistrate Rezaul Karim, who subsequently approved the 12-hour parole.

Dipu Moni is currently being held at Munshiganj District Jail.

Tawfique Nawaz, a barrister and the husband of former social welfare and education minister Dipu Moni, died at a private hospital on Tuesday (August 18) night while undergoing treatment.

Earlier, prison authorities had said that if an application for parole was received, further action would be taken in accordance with the rules.
