India wants to deepen business and economic ties with Bangladesh while allowing political issues to take their own course, Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi said Monday.
He stressed the need for stronger business-to-business cooperation and said both countries should work together to improve the lives of their people.
“Let us have business-to-business together. Politics will continue in its own way,” Trivedi told reporters at the Secretariat after meeting Commerce Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir.
The Indian envoy said Bangladesh and India are both sovereign and independent countries and should deal with each other on an equal footing.
“Nobody is big and nobody is small. We are all equals, and we have to work on that footing,” he said.
Trivedi also called for greater cooperation in areas that can create economic opportunities, including joint-venture projects in Bangladesh and development initiatives in border regions.
He said peace and prosperity should remain a priority for both countries, particularly for younger generations.
According to the envoy, ordinary people mainly want basic necessities and a peaceful life. Referring to Mahatma Gandhi, he said leaders should consider how their decisions affect the poorest sections of society.
Trivedi also highlighted the role of the private sector in strengthening ties between Bangladesh and India.
“No government in the world can provide everything. It always needs the private sector,” he said, adding that business communities in both countries have an important role in building stronger economic and people-to-people relations.
