Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi met Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman at a state guest house in Dhaka on Sunday, amid renewed tensions between the two countries.
A senior official familiar with the meeting told UNB that it was arranged in advance but said he was not aware of what was discussed.
The meeting came after former prime minister Sheikh Hasina delivered a speech in New Delhi that drew strong reactions in Bangladesh.
Despite the latest tensions, Bangladesh has said it wants to maintain constructive engagement with India and continue discussions on outstanding bilateral issues.
On August 6, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam said the two countries have several issues that need to be addressed through dialogue, including water, energy and border matters.
“We want our relations... because we have many issues with India, many bilateral issues - water, energy, and the border - that need to be resolved through discussion and dialogue,” she said.
She also said Bangladesh-India relations cover a wide range of areas and should not be viewed only through the current political situation.
“There are many aspects to a country’s relationship with another country. We need to have a lot of dialogue with them, and we need to hold discussions,” she said, pointing to cooperation in energy, water-sharing issues and border matters.
She stressed that these issues should be resolved through continued talks between the two neighbours.
