Bangladesh-origin American footballer Cavan Sullivan continues to make history in Major League Soccer (MLS). The Philadelphia Union forward has now become the first teenager in MLS history to register a goal or assist in five consecutive matches.
The 16-year-old Sullivan scored in Philadelphia’s 2-0 win over CF Montréal on Sunday. Danley Jean Jacques opened the scoring for the Union in the 57th minute before Sullivan doubled the lead in the 75th.
Sullivan’s goal came from a superb finish. After a teammate’s shot inside the box, he quickly read the ball’s trajectory and moved into position. He evaded several defenders before sending a first-time shot into the net.
The goal took Sullivan’s tally for Philadelphia this season to four. He also has seven assists, meaning the 16-year-old has now been directly involved in 11 goals this season.
Sullivan has also set a new single-season record for goal contributions among MLS players aged 16 or younger. The previous record belonged to former U.S. star Freddy Adu, who recorded four goals and six assists for 10 goal contributions at age 16 in 2005.
Earlier, Sullivan set another record when he became the youngest player in MLS history to contribute to a goal in four consecutive matches. He achieved the feat at the age of 16 years and 336 days.
Now, the Bangladesh-origin teenager has extended that run to five straight matches. With performances like this at just 16, expectations surrounding Cavan Sullivan are continuing to rise across MLS.
