Two people, including a Chinese national trapped inside a hydropower tunnel, were rescued alive in Nepal on Saturday, 10 days after devastating floods swept across parts of the country.
The Chinese worker was found inside a 225-metre tunnel at the Trishuli hydropower project, according to Nepal’s Prime Minister’s Office.
A joint team of Nepali soldiers and South Korean disaster-response specialists carried out the rescue. The survivor was medically assessed after being brought out and later flown by helicopter to safety, with an army medic accompanying him.
The rescue brought to three the number of workers found alive at the project. Two Nepali workers were rescued from a tunnel at the Trishuli 3A hydropower plant on Friday.
Video released by Chinese state broadcaster CCTV showed rescuers carrying the survivor out of the tunnel.
Authorities said around 900 workers remain missing from 12 hydropower projects across Nepal. About 500 of them are believed to be trapped inside tunnels.
In another rescue operation, army personnel found a woman alive inside a house in flood-hit Nuwakot town. She was covered in mud when rescuers reached her and was given water before being taken out wrapped in a blanket.
The woman was later airlifted to Kathmandu for medical treatment.
Nepal’s disaster management agency said at least 1,300 people were killed in the floods that began on August 26, while more than 5,000 remain missing.
The flooding was likely triggered by a glacier collapse, authorities said.
