Despite an abundance of vegetables in the markets, shoppers are feeling the pinch from high prices. Most vegetables are selling for Tk80–120 per kilogram, while prices of early-season winter vegetables are particularly high. Meanwhile, the price of broiler chicken has risen by Tk20 per kilogram. However, onion and garlic prices have each fallen by Tk10 per kilogram.
The situation was observed during visits to several kitchen markets in the capital, including Karwan Bazar, on Friday.
Alongside vegetables, chicken prices have also increased. Broiler chicken is now selling for Tk200 per kilogram, up Tk20 from the previous price.
Meanwhile, egg prices remain unchanged. As in the previous week, a dozen eggs are selling for Tk150. Rice prices are also relatively stable. There has also been no change in the prices of beef and mutton.
The prices of early-season winter vegetables have also put pressure on consumers. Beans are selling for Tk240 per kilogram, while cauliflower costs Tk100–120 per kilogram. Each cabbage is being sold for Tk100.
In the retail market, no vegetable other than green papaya and sweet pumpkin is available for less than Tk80 per kilogram. There has, however, been some relief in onion prices. The price of locally grown onions has fallen by Tk10 per kilogram and is now selling for Tk50–55.
