The amount of defaulted loans held by six state-owned banks stood at Tk 147,776.36 crore, Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury has said. Janata Bank PLC had the highest amount of defaulted loans among the six banks, according to figures as of June 30, 2026.
The finance minister disclosed the information on Sunday afternoon in response to a question from Md Abdul Alim, a member of parliament from the Bagerhat-4 constituency, during the third session of the Jatiya Sangsad. Deputy Speaker Barrister Kaiser Kamal presided over the session.
The minister said the six state-owned banks—Agrani Bank PLC, Bangladesh Development Bank PLC, BASIC Bank PLC, Janata Bank PLC, Rupali Bank PLC and Sonali Bank PLC—had a combined Tk 147,776.36 crore in defaulted loans as of June 30, 2026.
Janata Bank PLC had the highest amount of defaulted loans among the six banks.
According to figures provided by the finance minister, Agrani Bank PLC had Tk 29,029.67 crore in defaulted loans, Bangladesh Development Bank PLC had Tk 888.79 crore, BASIC Bank PLC had Tk 8,131.09 crore, Janata Bank PLC had Tk 75,396.67 crore, Rupali Bank PLC had Tk 19,281.74 crore, and Sonali Bank PLC had Tk 15,048.39 crore.
