The government has waived the disciplinary penalties imposed on officials of the National Board of Revenue (NBR) who were suspended and later given minor punishments for protesting against the ordinance to split the revenue agency.
The Internal Resources Division (IRD) issued separate notifications on Sunday announcing the decision to waive the penalties imposed on the officials. The notifications said the government had decided to waive the punishments of 21 officials who had received minor disciplinary penalties.
The decision had earlier been announced in separate notifications issued on September 2 and signed by Ahsan Habib, acting chairman of the NBR and acting secretary of the Internal Resources Division.
The officials’ punishments were waived following appeals submitted to the President, according to sources.
Earlier, at a revenue conference on August 18, NBR officials appealed to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to withdraw the disciplinary measures imposed on them.
They also expressed concern that the fear of further disciplinary action could disrupt revenue collection. At the conference, the head of government urged the officials to put the past behind them and move forward. He also assured them that the punishments would be waived.
The officials had been subjected to various disciplinary measures, including reductions in their basic salaries by two or more increments, over allegations including playing an organising role in the movement.
