Sergio Gor, the US ambassador-at-large for South and Central Asian Affairs, has arrived in Dhaka. The US Embassy Dhaka confirmed the visit. He reached Dhaka on Thursday afternoon for a three-day trip.
Welcoming Gor to Bangladesh in a Facebook post, US Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent T. Christensen wrote, “I am delighted to welcome to Bangladesh my friend, the U.S. Special Envoy to South and Central Asia, Ambassador Sergio Gor. His visit will strengthen U.S.-Bangladesh strategic ties and regional security and economic cooperation.”
Diplomatic sources said Gor, who previously served as the US ambassador to India, will take part in several engagements during his stay in Dhaka. He is expected to hold meetings with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman.
As part of his visit, Gor may travel to Cox’s Bazar on Friday, where he is expected to observe the current situation of Rohingya refugees firsthand.
According to diplomatic sources, the main objective of Gor’s visit is to gain a clear understanding of the priorities of Bangladesh’s new foreign policy and brief the US administration accordingly.
Recently, Foreign Affairs Adviser Obaidul Islam said that relations between Bangladesh and the United States have always been positive and that ties are becoming stronger under the current government.
Diplomatic sources said both countries hope Gor’s visit will add a new dimension to their diplomatic and economic relations.
Gor took charge as the US ambassador to India in January this year. In his role as the Special Envoy for South and Central Asian Affairs, he represents the United States in engaging with countries in the region, including Bangladesh and Nepal, in addition to India.
Before visiting Bangladesh, Gor had traveled to Nepal and Sri Lanka.
