Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has instructed law enforcement agencies to take tougher action against the use of polythene and plastic as part of efforts to control environmental pollution. He also directed the relevant ministries, divisions and agencies to properly carry out their assigned responsibilities in tackling environmental pollution.
The directives were issued at a review meeting on environmental pollution control chaired by the prime minister at the Bangladesh Secretariat on Wednesday morning.
The meeting discussed progress in implementing various government initiatives to prevent environmental pollution, including increasing the use of environmentally friendly block bricks, controlling air, water, soil and noise pollution, and improving waste management. The meeting also discussed future measures to make these efforts more effective.
Road Transport and Bridges, Railways and Shipping Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam; State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Mir Shahe Alam; State Minister for Water Resources Farhad Hossain Azad; State Minister for Environment, Forests and Climate Change Sheikh Faridul Islam; Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Gani; Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister A B M Abdus Sattar; Dhaka South City Corporation Administrator Md Abdus Salam; and the prime minister’s special assistant for environment, forests and climate change, Dr Saimum Parvez, attended the meeting.
Senior officials from various relevant ministries, divisions and agencies also participated in the meeting.
