Bangladesh’s exports to India rose 7.67% year-on-year to $335.2 million in the first two months of fiscal 2026-27, pointing to growing demand for Bangladeshi products in the neighbouring market.

Export earnings from India stood at $311.3 million in July-August last year, meaning exports increased by $23.9 million this year, according to country-wise data from the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB).

The growth comes as Bangladesh’s overall merchandise exports also continued to rise. The country earned around $9.16 billion from exports in the first two months of FY27, up from $8.69 billion during the same period a year earlier.

Exports to India alone jumped 15.37% in July, EPB data showed.

India remains an important market for Bangladesh because of its large consumer base, geographic proximity and strong trade connectivity. Exporters and other stakeholders see the recent growth as an opportunity to expand the presence of Bangladeshi products in the market.

However, Bangladesh continues to run a large trade deficit with India. In FY2025-26, Bangladesh imported goods worth around $11 billion from India, while exports to the country totalled about $1.75 billion, leaving a deficit of roughly $9.21 billion.

Stakeholders say increasing exports to India could help narrow the gap. They have also pointed to opportunities for Bangladeshi products such as processed food, plastic goods, jute and jute products, leather goods and readymade garments.

Exports to several other major markets also recorded growth during the first two months of FY27.

Shipments to the United States increased 11.90% to $1.87 billion, while exports to Spain rose 11.70% to $838.5 million.

Exports to the United Kingdom grew 4.54% to $970.4 million, while those to the Netherlands increased 5.82% to $493.5 million. Exports to Canada also rose 3.33% to $279.3 million.

Among emerging markets, Turkey recorded the strongest growth, with exports surging 87.10% to $138.9 million. Exports to the United Arab Emirates rose 19.50% to $74.2 million, while shipments to Mexico increased 15.55% to $65 million.

Bangladesh’s exports to Sweden grew 12.09% to $130.4 million, while exports to Australia rose 2.51% to $164.9 million.

The overall export performance was also stronger in August. Bangladesh exported goods worth $4.43 billion that month, up 13.14% from $3.92 billion in August last year.

Stakeholders believe continued expansion in India, along with new markets and greater product diversification, could help Bangladesh increase export earnings and reduce its trade imbalance with India.
